This Foundation Month, the University of the Philippines celebrates its legacy of service and its continuing mission to respond to the needs of the nation.
Over the past 117 years, the University of the Philippines has proven itself worthy of the title of the country’s national university. Surviving world wars, colonial occupations, civil rights struggles and cultural upheavals, economic downturns and upsurges, UP has played a role in shaping the nation’s political and social consciousness, and ultimately helping to define the national identity.
The University of the Philippines integrates sustainability into all aspects of its mission — academic excellence, public service, and research and innovation — aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals guide our initiatives in promoting health, inclusive education, gender equity, sustainable and people-centered communities, decisive climate action, and partnerships that advance the common good.
Control is one of the central principles underlying any feat of engineering. By harnessing and controlling the laws of nature, engineers not only shape the world to their will, they ensure that the products of their imagination behave predictably and for the greater good. That beautiful idea certainly motivated Micah Angelo Bacani, an alumnus of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute, University of the Philippines Diliman.
In the face of worsening floods and failing water systems, researchers from the University of the Philippines Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology are turning to artificial intelligence for answers. By teaching machines to understand our rivers and wetlands, UP scientists hope to help government agencies make smarter, data-driven decisions that protect both people and the planet.
With a focus on fostering a just, equitable, and sustainable society, UP’s strategic themes prioritize preparing graduates for the future, promoting public service for the common good and ensuring transparent and accountable governance.
