The University of the Philippines community gathered, Sept. 7, to honor Dr. Prospero Covar — a cultural anthropologist and scholar whose work deepened understanding of Filipino society and culture. The pasundayag sa “Ama ng Pilipinolohiya” was held at the UP Film Center, UP Diliman.

Covar’s former students and advisees, who are now academicians at the university, delivered messages honoring his contribution to Philippine studies. The event also showcased performances celebrating Filipino culture and artistry.

A screening of Reuben Domingo’s documentary, “Bahala na si Bathala sa mga Banal na Bata,” was also held before the event. Covar, whose work focused on folk Catholicism and indigenous faith, served as the film’s consultant.

The UP College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, UP Film Institute, UP Tri-College PhD in Philippine Studies Program, and Aliguyon-University of the Philippines Folklorists, Inc. organized the pasundayag.

Pasundayag is a Cebuano term for “celebration.”
