Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Slovak Republic to the Philippines Miloš Koterec visited University of the Philippines President Angelo Jimenez, Sept. 8, to discuss possible partnerships between UP and Slovak universities.  

 

Jimenez introduced to Koterec top university officials, UP Vice President for Research and Innovation Joel Joseph Marciano Jr., Assistant Vice President for Research and Innovation (Convergence and Translation) Dave Centeno, Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs for Faculty Development Ian Kendrich Fontanilla, and Office of International Linkages Officer-In-Charge and Deputy Director Gino Angelo Velasco. The ambassador was accompanied by his friend, Cris Magallona.

 

UP Los Baños and Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava (STU) has a Memorandum of Understanding signed May 23, 2025 for general cooperation and an agreement for higher education staff mobility with support from the Erasmus+ Programme.

Koterec, a career diplomat, was previously assigned as Permanent Representative of Slovakia to the United Nations in New York, head of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Ambassador for Financing Development Cooperation and the European Union’s Global Gateway Strategy, and Ambassador for Technology and Innovation in Finland. 

 

The officials were later joined by former Department of Health Secretary and former UP Executive Vice President Teodoro Herbosa who arrived for a separate meeting with Jimenez.

 

The Philippines and Slovakia have maintained active diplomatic relations since 1993, working for bilateral cooperation in key sectors such as engineering, agriculture, technology, and innovation.
