The University of the Philippines extends its deepest sympathies and solidarity to all individuals, families, and communities affected by the recent earthquake in Mindanao. We grieve with those who have lost loved ones, and we stand with those who have been displaced from their homes, workplaces, community spaces, and schools, including state universities and colleges.
UP Mindanao has accounted for its students, faculty, and staff, and provided support for those affected. We are thankful for their safety and the continued support they receive from our UP community.
In response to the urgent need for coordinated support, UP has also mobilized its expertise and resources to assist affected communities and help ensure community safety.
UP has deployed a team of scientists and engineers, led by Dr. Mahar Lagmay of the UP Resilience Institute, to conduct structural inspections and assessments in affected areas. These efforts aim to guide local authorities and stakeholders in making informed, science-driven decisions on the repair and rebuilding of structures, and preventing risks in the long-term.
The University has also launched a fundraising campaign through the Padayon Public Service Office, which coordinates public service initiatives across the UP system, to provide immediate relief and sustained support for recovery and rehabilitation. This initiative seeks to address essential needs and contribute to long-term rebuilding efforts in the hardest-hit communities.
In the spirit of bayanihan and service to the Filipino people, UP calls on its students, faculty, staff, alumni, partners, and the broader public to join us in concrete expressions of solidarity and support. Through collective generosity and action, we can help families and communities in their journey toward healing and recovery.
