The University of the Philippines will celebrate its 117th founding anniversary with a weeklong series of activities, highlighted by a free concert of the UP Symphony Orchestra on June 18, 2025.
The concert, titled Alay sa Pamantasan ng Sambayanan, will be held at the UP Theater in UP Diliman at 6 p.m to commemorate both UP’s foundation day and Philippine Independence Day. Among the concert’s highlights is a performance of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s iconic “1812 Overture,” famously featured in the 2005 film V for Vendetta. The free concert is one of the highlights of the second year of Linggo ng Unibersidad which will be held from June 16 to 20, 2025 to recognize the unwavering commitment and outstanding contributions of UP faculty, staff, students, and alumni in promoting excellence and service for the country.
This year’s theme, Ani at Alay: Paglilingkod at Pasidungog sa Bayan, reflects the narrative cycle of learning, service offering, and nation building. “Ani is the harvest of hard work, persistence, and sacrifice. Alay, on the other hand, is the offering the UP community makes of its talents and learning in service of the Filipino people,” explained UP President Angelo A. Jimenez. “It is a call to remember that everything we do here in UP is ultimately in pursuit of a greater purpose: paglilingkod sa bayan at pasidungog para sa sambayanan,” he added.
The national university has produced over 300,000 graduates. Among its remarkable alumni include six Philippine Presidents, 14 Senate Presidents, 14 House Speakers, 16 Supreme Court Chief Justices, 44 national artists, 40 national scientists, eight national social scientists.
Jimenez invites everyone to the concert. “We owe all of our achievements to the invaluable support of the Filipino people—and this free concert showcasing the talents of the UP community is our humble gift,” he said.
Jimenez noted that Linggo ng Unibersidad “does not merely celebrate its 117th year. Above all, we take this opportunity to look back on our shared struggles and milestones throughout the years as we reaffirm UP’s enduring commitment to serve the Filipino people with honor and excellence.”
