The University of the Philippines (UP) will host the European Association for Southeast Asian Studies (EuroSEAS) PhD masterclass in UP Diliman from July 15 to 17, 2025. This is the second to be held in Southeast Asia.

Academics, researchers, and scholars from Europe and Southeast Asia will meet at the UP Center of Women’s and Gender Studies (UPCWGS) to engage in critical discussions and collaborative learning on the region’s diverse range of topics.

The masterclass aims to enrich the academic pursuits of young scholars in Southeast Asia by providing them the opportunity to interact and engage with experts in their fields of study.

A select group of PhD students will be mentored by five leading scholars on Southeast Asian studies: Prof. Manneke Budiman of Universitas Indonesia; Dr. Sayamol Charoenratana of Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand; Prof. Reza Idria of State Islamic University Ar-Raniry, Banda Aceh, Indonesia; former EuroSEAS President Prof. Silvia Vignato of Università di Milano-Bicocca, Italy; and Prof. Marie Aubrey Villaceran of UP.

Prof. Eloisa May P. Hernandez, EuroSEAS board member and UPCWGS fellow, led the organization of this initiative, in collaboration with EuroSEAS, the UP Office of International Linkages, and UPCWGS.

EuroSEAS is a European-based, world-oriented association that aims to stimulate scholarly cooperation and collaboration between European and Southeast Asian countries. It organizes a biennial international conference and a yearly PhD Masterclass Seminar. The first PhD masterclass seminar held in Southeast Asia was in Malang State University, Indonesia.
