“I know you’re earning deep technical skills in this course… It is very important to apply these in solving problems and challenges in society. And to do that, we have to team up together… Instead of solving just a very narrow problem, let’s try to address a larger, societal-scale problem with the skills that you have.” UP Vice President for Research Innovation Joel Joseph Marciano advises enrollees of the Matsuo-Iwasawa Laboratory Global Consumer Intelligence course from the Philippines and welcomes the teaching team from the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Engineering laboratory during a hackathon and lecture for the course, May 19 at UP Diliman. The University of the Philippines hosted the Global Consumer Intelligence Hackathon and Lecture, May 19 at the UP Diliman School of Statistics. A collaboration between the UP Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation and Matsuo-Iwasawa Laboratory of the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Engineering, the event aimed to expand the competencies of GSI course participants — 1,781 of whom are from UP, 581 of them from UPD.
Hackathon participants were tasked to create a machine learning model predicting the probability of loan defaulting by using several data sets. Electronics Engineering student Kent Joseph Palima won first place, earning the honor of Outstanding Student and getting a free study tour in Japan.
