Some 650 administrators, academic leaders, and quality assurance officers from across the University of the Philippines System convened for the first-ever UP System QA Conference to strengthen and harmonize their QA systems, as informed by frameworks, philosophies, and trends across the globe.
Organized by the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs through its UP System QA Office headed by Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs (QA) Alyssa Peleo-Alampay, the conference aimed to concretize the theme: Quality as Duty, Excellence as Legacy: Forging the Future of UP as the National University. It was held June 8 to 9 at the Philippine International Convention Center, Pasay City.
The two-day event concluded with each constituent university presenting its draft roadmap to sustaining quality culture — this after hearing each other’s QA journeys and listening to local and international resource persons on evolving QA trends in higher education and on the QA systems of selected higher educational institutions in ASEAN, Australia, and Europe.

A plenary was also conducted for “future-proofing” higher education, highlighting the values of sustainability, bringing into focus the special cases of creatives, and examining the implications of the Philippine Qualifications Framework on QA.
“[The roadmaps] are your CU’s promises to build on what has been achieved and to address honestly what still needs work. The next chapter of QA in UP will be shaped by the conversations that started in this room, and I am genuinely excited about what that chapter will look like,” Peleo-Alampay said in her closing remarks. “At its best, QA is an act of care. It is how an institution says to its students: We take your time seriously, we take your learning seriously, we take your future seriously, and we are committed to doing better always.”
