The University of the Philippines proudly congratulates Regent Alfredo Pascual for being honored by the Junior Chamber International Senate Philippines as the 2025 The Outstanding Filipino Awardee for the Government Sector.
A renowned public servant and leader in business and education, Pascual has worked as an international development banker, corporate governance advocate, and management educator throughout the past five decades.
He finished his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, cum laude, and Master of Business Administration degrees from UP Diliman in 1969 and 1972, respectively. He was also conferred an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by the University in 2020.
Prior to his current appointment to the UP Board of Regents, Pascual was secretary of the Department of Trade and Industry from 2022 to 2024. He first became a member of the UP BOR as Alumni Regent from 2009 to 2010 before serving as the 20th president of the University from 2011 to 2017 in a term marked by impactful initiatives and reforms — especially the institutionalization of the “One UP” paradigm, which sought to unify the UP System across its eight constituent universities.
During his term as UP President, he received recognition such as the Rotary Golden Wheel Award in 2013 and the Presidential Lingkod Bayan Award in 2014 for his exemplary leadership in higher education and distinguished public service. The UP Alumni Association also recognized Pascual with the Presidential Merit Award for Service in 2024.
