The University of the Philippines strongly condemns the senseless killing of UP Diliman student Sophia Coquilla, who was murdered in her home in Tagum City on 9 July 2025.
The entire UP community mourns with Sophia’s family and friends. Such a violent act cut short a life full of promise, and robbed the nation of a bright mind and future leader. We grieve over the loss of a daughter, classmate, friend, and Iskolar ng Bayan.
The University has offered support to Sophia’s family and others affected by this tragedy. Students and other members of the UP community may avail of the university’s psychosocial services in this time of grief and loss.
This tragedy is also a stark reminder that we must be vigilant in safeguarding the lives and rights of our fellow citizens, fostering a society where senseless harm is met with unwavering resolve and compassion.
We call on law enforcement agencies to conduct a swift, transparent, and comprehensive investigation into the crime, and to bring the perpetrators to justice. No family should have to endure the anguish of unanswered questions, and no criminal act should remain unpunished.
We stand united in pursuing the conviction of those who commit such heinous acts. As we continue to work for a society that protects human life and keeps families safe in their homes, today, we demand justice for Sophia.
