The University of the Philippines paid tribute to National Artists Benedicto Cabrera, Resil Mojares, and Agnes Locsin during the third edition of Tanghal Tertulia, Feb. 21.
Homegrown talents from the university, together with some of the country’s most esteemed artists, led the festive gathering at the UP Executive House Amphitheater, UP Diliman as they traversed the country’s rich cultures and diverse dance and soundscapes across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
Beyond being a mere cultural showcase, however, Atty. Edlyn Frances Verzola, president of the UP chapter of the Philippine Association of University Women, underscored that Tanghal Tertulia was “a cause, an invitation to listen, to remember, and to situate ourselves within a longer story of artistic labor and national imagination.”
UP President Angelo Jimenez likewise emphasized in his message the importance of paying homage to the contributions of the country’s National Artists in creating and building the Filipino identity: “By honoring them, we honor ourselves.”
Tanghal Tertulia is UP’s annual cultural program celebrating the university’s homegrown National Artists, led by the UP Office of the President with the UP Diliman College of Music,, PAUW-UP Chapter, the UP President’s Committee on Culture and the Arts, the UP Office of the Vice President for Public Affairs, and TVUP. It recently won the Best Special Events Production Award at the 38th Aliw Awards — the only event from a higher education institution recognized in the category.
