UP webinar zeroes in on mass casualty incidents in a time of war and pandemic

| Written by Deina Blancaflor

A few weeks ago, the “Stop COVID Deaths webinar series discussed the possibility of war in a time of the pandemic. Today, we are already seeing this firsthand. As the conflict between Ukraine and Russia rages on, countries must prepare for whatever consequences this may lead to, such as the further spread of the COVID-19 virus, price hikes, and other threats.

How can this war in Europe further risk and affect other countries? As healthcare workers, what do we need to know about chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives (CBRNE)? What do we do if we are faced with many people rushed to emergency care and we are unsure of the cause of a mass casualty incident?

The University of the Philippines (UP), in partnership with UP Manila National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Telehealth Center, and cooperation with UP Philippine General Hospital (PGH), invite you to join the fight against COVID-19.

This Friday, March 25, 2022, from 12 pm to 2 pm, the “Stop COVID Deaths” webinar will answer all these questions and present information about CBRNE in connection to recent events. Titled “DOSE-DOSENANG SINUGOD SA EMERGENCY ROOM: Anong gagawin ninyo ngayong may COVID-19 Pandemic?”, Dr. April B. Llaneta, former chair of the UP PGH Department of Emergency Medicine and highly trained in CBRNE, will be the main speaker.

Meanwhile, John Bernard F. Bernardo, a CBRNE nurse, will share his insights and personal experiences. Dr. Irma Makalinao, professor of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the UP College of Medicine, will give a special message. At the same time, Dr. Teodoro J. Herbosa, UP PGH chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine, and Dr. Stella Marie L. Jose, UP PGH deputy director for Health Operations, will deliver the opening and closing remarks.
