UP Computer Science students bag the JavaOne 2008 Duke’s Choice Award for their “ESP: Expert System for Poison” undergraduate project. Selected by none other than Java creator, Dr. James Gosling, the award was received by Prof. Rommel Feria and former instructor John Paul Petines in San Francisco, California, USA.

This is the first Duke’s Choice award for a Filipino team after Prof. Rom Feria and Mr. JP Petines became the first JavaOne conference presenters from the Philippines last year. These achievements put the University of the Philippines in the global Java map!

UP Sandigan, a college-based socio-political organization of the College of Pharmacy bagged one of the spots for this year’s Search for the Ten Accomplished Youth Organization (TAYO).

TAYO is a yearly search that recognizes 10 youth organizations from all over the country for its civic projects, which have made the most impact in their communities. The project is a brainchild of Senator Francis Pangilinan and is overseen by the TAYO Foundation and the National Youth Commission (NYC). This prestigious search aims to recognize the efforts made by young Filipino in empowering their communities and also reviving the role of youth in nation-building.

From a total of 120 aspiring organizations all over the country which joined the search, only twenty finalists were chosen, five from each area: NCR, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao . And from the twenty finalists, 10 organizations emerged as victors at the end of the day.  The awarding ceremony was held last Oct 22 at Hotel Intecontinental Manila with Sen. Kiko Pangilinan as the keynote speaker and with Mr. Paolo Benigno Aquino IV, the president of the TAYO Awards Foundation, announcing the ten winners. The organization was represented by Ms. Eda Marie W. Cabangal, the immediate past chairperson.

The organization’s project entry which gathered attention from the panel of judges was entitled, “Reach for more H.O.MEs (Health Education/ Outreach Program and Medicial Missions”. This project was created so as to deliver free access to medicine by some communities and also integrate the practice of pharmacy in delivering healthcare to the residents. Among the core component of the project is the promotion on the awareness of rational drug use and also to familiarize the uses and applications of the Sampung Halamang Gamot as an alternative medicine.

International Biofuels Conference Slated in Manila

Biofuels were launched to instant celebrity status soon after the Philippines Biofuels Law was passed in 2006. It became a buzzword not only in academic circles but also in the media. The big question remains, “Are we ready to produce biofuels?” This and other concerns will be discussed in an upcoming international biofuels conference in Manila.

The Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) and the Center for Chinese Agricultural Policy (CCAP), together with the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) organized a workshop titled Biofuels Development in Southeast and East Asia: Policy Issues and Research Agenda to be held on 7-8 October 2007 at Renaissance Hotel, Makati City, Philippines. The workshop will gather key stakeholders in energy development to discuss a systematic and research-based impact assessment initiative on biofuel development in the Southeast and East Asia region.

Specifically, discussions will focus on: (1) identifying key policy issues and agenda for research; (2) coming up with an overall framework for the impact assessment study; and (3) establishing the regional and country teams in the selected Southeast Asian countries that will undertake the assessment study.

International resource speakers will present global and regional perspectives on the topic as well as country papers on national biofuel initiatives. There will be representatives from China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Thailand.
