50th UP National Writers Workshop Call for Applications

LIKHAAN: The University of the Philippines Institute of Creative Writing (UP ICW) is now accepting applications for the 50th UP National Writers Workshop to be held in Baguio City in April 2011.
The director of the 2011 workshop is Likhaan Fellow Jun Cruz Reyes. The Advisers, Fellows, and Associates of the UP ICW comprise the workshop panel. These are Gemino Abad, UP ICW Director Jose Y. Dalisay Jr., Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo, J. Neil Garcia, Charlson Ong, Conchitina Cruz, National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera, National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario, Victor Emmanuel Carmelo Nadera Jr., Rolando Tolentino, Mario Miclat, and Romulo Baquiran Jr.
The following are the submission guidelines:
QUALIFICATIONS – To qualify, applicants: (1) must be writers in English or Filipino; (2) must have attended at least one creative writing workshop (national/regional, including the UP National Writers Workshops), or earned a degree in Creative Writing/Malikhaing Pagsulat, or won at least one national/international literary award; (3) must have published at least three poems or two short stories or two pieces of creative nonfiction in reputable collections or anthologies, journals, magazines (including campus publications), or refereed Internet web magazines, or have had a play staged. Writers who have been fellows at any of the UP National Writers Workshops are eligible. Some of these qualifications may be waived in exceptionally meritorious cases, with the unanimous concurrence of the UP ICW Fellows, Associates, and Advisers. |

UPLB SAMASINING Brings Ondine Musicale to Life

The home of well-acclaimed theatre productions in the University of the Philippines Los Baños, the breeding ground of creative minds that believe in stories worth staging— UPLB SAMSINING, in collaboration with the Theatre Communication class of this semester, is once again staging another production one should not miss.
University of the Philippines Los Baños SAMASINING (UPLB SAMASINING), the laboratory arm of the Department of Humanities, has taken the lead in producing high quality plays that enhance the students’ study of and appreciation for the arts and the humanities at the secondary and collegiate levels through the years.
Composed of faculty and students, SAMASINING aims to provide alternative venues of education through theatrical presentations, dance and musical concerts, art exhibits, film screenings, creative writing workshops, and other related activities. It also aspires to develop faculty members and students’ potential in the literary, visual, and performing arts. For Communication Arts students, SAMASINING is a creative ground where they gain practical and hands-on experiences in various aspects of collaborative artistic work and production management.
Continuing this artistic tradition, SAMASINING, in collaboration with Theatre Communication class, is staging Jo-Anne D. Quiros’ Filipino adaptation of Jean Giraudoux’s “Ondine,” to be directed by Mr. Jeremy N. Dela Cruz and Mr. Ron H. Biñas.
The play Ondine is a classic and archetypal story showing the compatibility between the real and ideal. Although the stage drama has a doomed end, its unselfish and amorous attempts to unite the ideal and the real unravel this tale of fantasy, love and heroism.
It started when Alfonso, a knight errant, showed up in a fisherman’s hut. |

The University of the Philippines Singing Ambassadors (UPSA)—2002 ALIW AWARDEE for Choral Music, 2005 OFFICIAL PHILIPPINE ENTRY to the UNESCO International Music Prize in Paris, FRANCE, and the ONLY Asian choir to have won the GRAND PRIZE in the most esteemed Guido d’ Arezzo Competitions in ITALY—celebrates its 30th year of choral artistry in
Ika-3 Dekada: UPSAma-sama. This Grand Reunion of UPSA batches from the 80’s to the present is set to be staged on August 27 (Friday),
7:30 PM, at the CCP Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (Main Theater).
Led by Founder and Conductor, Edgardo “Ed” Manguiat, UPSA has put together a remarkable line-up of Classic, Standard and Contemporary choral pieces in French, Latin, Italian, English and Filipino. One of the most-anticipated numbers is the group’s rendition of Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats, from the musicale CATS, choreographed by Van Manalo of the UP Filipiniana Dance Group.
UPSA achievers and prominent personalities who have excelled in their respective fields will also be featured in the celebration. UPSA Alumni and Beauty Queens Zoraida Ruth Andam (Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 2001), Patricia Fernandez (Bb. Pilipinas-International 2008) and Camilla Kim-Galvez (Mrs. Philippines 2009); and 2008 Pinoy Idol Gretchen Espina, among others, will be performing with the resident UPSA members and other alumni.

DECL launches centennial celebration in June 18 ceremonies

This school year, 2001-2011, the Department of English and Comparative Literature, the double center of excellence –for both English and for Literature – is celebrating its one hundred (100) years of excellence and leadership in creative writing, teaching, research, and extension services.
The Opening ceremonies at the Claro M. Recto Hall, Faculty Center on June 18, at 3:00 in the afternoon, will launch the year long celebratory activities and projects. Dr. Emmanuel Angeles, Chairman of the Commission on Higher Education, and of the U.P. Board of Regents; Dr. Sergio S. Cao, Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Diliman; and Dr. Vivencio Jose, former Department Chairperson, College Dean, and University Secretary will be the guests of honor. They will give their responses to the Department chairperson, Dr. Adelaida F. Lucero’s presentation on the glory and the grandeur of the Department of English and Comparative Literature.
Other features of the program include multiperformances: “Faeder Ure,” the “Lord’s Prayer in Old English, by Dr. Carlos Aureus; Shakespeare performance poetry by Ms. Jeena Marquez-Manaois; Dr. Jonathan Malixi’s interpretative singing of John Donne’s “Batter My Heart;” and “Mi Ultimo Adios” danced by Ms. Myra Beltran, a graduate student. Next will be the unveiling of the DECL centennial website, centennial logo, centennial publications, and the calendar of monthly celebrations. The afternoon will be capped by an adaptation of the Ilocano birthday ritual foregrounding the floral coronation of the former chairpersons of the department, representing different decades of its centenary, and a symbolic offering of a hundred roses to the faculty, alumni, and students. |

About the Speaker:
Hal Hill is the H.W. Arndt Professor of Southeast Asian Economies in the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, Australian National University. From 1986 to 1998 he headed the University’s Indonesia Project and for much of this time also edited the Bulletin of Indonesian Economic Studies.
His main research interests are the economies of ASEAN, especially Indonesia and The Philippines; industrialization and foreign investment in East Asia; and Australia’s economic relations with the Asia-Pacific region.

Dulaang UP Launches ‘Essential Theater Season’

Dulaang UP (DUP), the official theater arm of the UP Diliman Department of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts, is expected to again provide everyone the full spectrum of theatrical experience as it launches its 35th season on August.
This year, DUP has chosen to restage four of its most celebrated plays that tackle complex and relevant issues that affect our lives as Filipinos.
Following last year’s season that showcased German masterpieces, DUP’s upcoming season is an appropriate package as it features plays that are amalgamations of art, culture, psychology, history and reflection of the Filipino identity.
The season’s Essential Theater begins with the restaging of Francisco Baltazar’s Orosman at Zafira (August 11-29, 2010), under the direction of Dexter Santos. The play weaves love, honor and power into an inspiring tale of conflict and later on the unity of the kingdoms of Marruecos, Tendenst and Duquela.
Floy Quintos’ Shock Value… Take 2 (September 8-26, 2010), under the direction of Alexander C. Cortez, is a sequel to Shock Value staged on August 30-September 17, 2006. It portrays a monster hit of a reality TV show where a TV producer and one act of indiscretion takes his life on a downward spiral. The play examines how modern television presents, distorts and manipulates issues and personalities all in the name of truth and factual presentation.
Isang Panaginip na Fili, A musical (November 24-December 12, 2010), written and directed by Floy Quintos. Focusing on the idea of transofrmation the play attempts to interpret Rizal’s dreams and Tunying Ibañez’s point-of-view to provide a window for viewing on how the hero could have written his novel. |
